Guiding the Qualitative E-Researcher Towards Ethical Scholarship

     Friday, August 03, 2012

    10:00 AM to 12:30 PM

Sheraton Boston Hotel, Back Bay Ballroom A

Ethical and practical questions arise when scholars decide to conduct
qualitative interviews or observations online.  For example:

When I interview consenting participants online, can I also use the
information or images posted on their Facebook pages as data? Can I
use information in their avatars’ profiles? Or their
    tweets/blogs/websites?

Can I be sure the person I am interviewing is who I think he is (and
is over 18) when I recruit participants online?

How do I know what is “public” versus “private” space online? If I
want to observe people in an online community, do I need to announce
that I am a researcher and obtain informed consent from the people who
    post?

Is an avatar a “human subject”? Are researchers responsible for
protecting the online identity of participants?

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore and discuss
emerging research dilemmas and current thinking about ethical research
    practices.

Why should I attend? This workshop is relevant if....

you teach undergrad or Masters’ level online, ground or blended
classes in business– and want to create engaging assignments or
projects that allow students to bridge theory and practice…

you teach undergrad or Masters’ level online, ground or blended
classes in research methods and want to offer assignments or projects
that enable students to practice data collection with e-research…

you teach doctoral students or and/or supervise researchers who want
    to collect qualitative data online…

you are a researcher and want to learn more about how to collect data online…

Janet Salmons will draw research scenarios and examples from her
books, Online Interviews in Real Time (Salmons, 2010) and Cases in
Online Interview Research (Salmons, 2012). She will share and explain
her E-Interview Research Framework, an inter-related set of key
questions to consider and models to use when designing, or reviewing a
design, for online qualitative data collection.
