  • 1.  Scale to Measure Resilience

    Posted 06-02-2012 02:28
    Greetings!

One of my doctoral students is studying resilience in entrepreneurs of various ethnic groups. Could someone recommend a well-accepted, validated scale to measure resilience?  Your recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Lois,

The "Grit" scale may be useful. Grit is defined as trait-level perseverance and passion for long-term goals, although it is not specifically developed for entrepreneurship.

Duckworth, Angela Lee and Quinn, Patrick D.(2009) 'Development and Validation of the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S)', Journal of Personality Assessment, 91: 2, 166 - 174.

    Best,

The only widely used resilience scale I've come across is  one by Wagnild and Young from the nursing/medical literature.  The lack of study on resilience in organizational settings was one of the issues pointed out by Stajkovic in his JAP article on Core Confdence as a Higher Order Construct.  A substitute or complimentary measure could be to use self-efficacy scales which if constructed properly provide a reliable measure of persistence which I'd imagine is a desirable/necessary trait in entrepreneurs.  GL!

    Hi Lois,
Psychologists studied hardiness as a trait indicative of stress
resilience. I recommend starting with Kobasa and Maddi:

Kobasa, S.C. (1979). Stressful life events, personality, and health: An
inquiry into hardiness. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 37
    (1), 1-11.
    Kobasa, S.C., Maddi, S.R., & Kahn, S. (1982). Hardiness and health: A
prospective study. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 42 (1),
    168-177.
    Maddi, S.R., Harvey, R.H., Khoshaba, D.M., Lu, J.L., Persico, M., &
Brow, M. (2006). The personality construct of hardiness, III:
Relationships with repression, innovativeness, authoritarianism, and
    performance. Journal of Personality, 74 (2), 575-598.
    Maddi, S.R., Khoshaba, D.M., Persico, M., Lu, J. Harvey, R., &
Bleecker, F. (2002). The personality construct of hardiness II:
Relationships with comprehensive tests of personality and
psychopathology. Journal of Research in Personality, 36¸72-85.

Mike Campion also did some work with items that capture the hardiness
domain. They can be found in:

Campion, M.A. (1988). Interdisciplinary approaches to job design: A
constructive replication with extensions. Journal of Applied Psychology,
    73, 467-481.

    Best wishes,

    Tim Munyon

Campion (1988 - JAP) also has items that capture the domain.
