    Hi  OB Community,

My colleagues and I are working on a project that involves measuring employees' general perception of their work environment .

Please can you point me to some relevant but reliable scales to measure this construct?.

    Many thanks

    Remi

    Hi Remi!

Please approach your search for scales with the following pointers in mind:

    a. Employees' job satisfaction (Wherein, employee's satisfaction would
be a consequent variable, and, work environment would be antecedent
variable. And, within the work environment variable should be included
    a host of other sub-variables.)

    b. Employees' performance (Wherein, employee's performance would be a
function of his work environment. Here, I actually perceive that your
study is a replication of Hawthorne experiements, Remi!)

There would be so many mediating and moderating variables involved in
this study. And, a similar quantum of scales.)

    Regards,

    Stuti.

    Hi!

Although it is a few decades old, I have had success using a six-item scale of "satisfaction with physical workplace conditions" I found in:

Smith, F.J. 1976. Index of organizational reactions. JSAS Catalog of Selected Documents in Psychology, 6(1), 54, No. 1265.

Much of my research concerns safety conditions in the work environment. The social cognition literature looks at the work environment from a people point of view and measures of safety climate reflect that approach.  Look for works by Zohar or Zohar and Luria.

Zohar, D. 2000. Safety climate in industrial organizations: Theoretical and applied implications. Journal of Applied Psychology, 65: 96-102.

Zohar, D., & Luria, G. 2004. Climate as a social-cognitive construction of supervisory safety practices: Scripts as proxy of behavior patterns. Journal of Applied Psychology, 89: 322-333.

Perhaps these will suggest some directions for your work.

    Hi Remi,

We created a 5-item scale that measures perceptions of the supportiveness of the work environment.

Geddes, D. & Stickney, L. T. (2011). The trouble with sanctions: Organizational responses to deviant anger displays at work. Human Relations, 64, 201-230. doi: 10.1177/0018726710375482

    Good luck,
