  • 1.  Meta-analysis coaching effectiveness: request for papers

    Posted 02-03-2012 06:13
    Dear Colleagues,

We (Tim Theeboom, Prof. Dr. Annelies van Vianen and Dr. Bianca Beersma) are conducting a meta-analysis on the effectiveness of (workplace) coaching (both executive and non-executive coaching).

We have already conducted an extensive backward and forward search for published studies (a list of references is attached to this email). However, we want to be sure that we include all relevant studies in our analysis. If you have a study that meets the criteria outlined below, published or unpublished, we would appreciate it if you could point us to the reference or better yet, send a copy of the paper/manuscript to t.theeboom@uva.nl

    We are looking for studies:

    • That include quantative data on the effects of coaching on individuals and/or groups (we are interested in multiple dependent variables, such as, for  example, GAS related measures, mental Health and well-being measures, objective and subjective performance measures etc.).
    • in which coaching is provided by professional coaches or trained managers/peers
    • in which the coaching procedure/process is clearly described
    • in which the coachees belong to a non-clinical population

Since the analysis demands that all effects are transformed into a general effect size measure (mean based), the inclusion of the following statistics would be really helpful:

    • Means and standard deviations of pre and post scores (for both experimental and control groups in a between-subjects or mixed design) and/or means and standard deviations of the difference scores
    • Correlations among study variables, especially the correlations between pre- and post-scores on the dependent variables (for both experimental and control groups in a between-subjects or mixed design)
    • The number of subjects per condition
    Thanks in advance,

    Tim Theeboom
    Annelies van Vianen
    Bianca Beersma

    Met vriendelijke groet,

    Kind regards,

    Tim,

The following book includes a chapter on coaching and a long list of references regarding this issue:

Aguinis, H. (2013). Performance management (3rd edition). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Prentice Hall.

If you are considering adopting this book for a course, you will able to get a complimentary paper and/or electronic version of it at the following site: http://www.pearsonhighered.com/educator/product/Performance-Management-3E/9780132556385.page

Best of luck with your data gathering efforts.

Thank you for providing a list of your references for this research effort.

You may already be doing this, but you may wish to code for variables related to the strength of the coaching intervention and the malleability of the behaviors as they should both account for heterogeneity in the effect sizes. These variables would likely account for large portions of the variance beyond random sampling error..

Concerning strength of the coaching intervention, the length of the coaching and the content of the coaching may reflect strength of the intervention. Coaching sessions held weekly and addressing key issues could be expected to have greater impact than having an occasional lunch with a coach. Likewise, effect sizes may vary as a result of whether the coach is an external consultant who does coaching all the time or whether the coach is internal and has no particular coaching training.

Concerning malleability, the chapter by Hellervick, Hazucha and Schneider (1992) addresses this issue.  One could expect a large effect size if the coaching is addressing a small and malleable issue and a much smaller effect size if one is addressing a broader range of behavior that has limited malleability. Thus, one can influence an employee not to curse in the workplace but it would be much more difficult to make the person a compelling public speaker.

    Best wishes,

    Mike
