  • 1.  Overview of leadership theories?

    Dear friends,

I'm trying to identify an academic article or a book chapter that summarizes the main leadership theories. I'd prefer something that is recent and suitable for a class reading in an MBA class in OB. I have the Avolio et al (2009) article but could use a few suggestions. Please feel free to respond to kyprianou@utexas.edu.

    Thank you for your help.

    Christina,

You can take a look at Hernandez, M., Eberly, M. B., Avolio, B. J. & Johnson, M. D. (2011). The loci and mechanisms of leadership: Exploring a more comprehensive view of leadership theory. The Leadership Quarterly, 22, 1165-1185.

The best summaries to the mid-1990s:
House, R.J. and Aditya, R.N. (1997). The Social Scientific Study of Leadership: Quo Vadis? Journal of Management, 23(3): 409-73.

House, R.J., Wright, N. & Aditya, R.N. (1997). Cross Cultural Research on Organizational Leadership: A Critical Analysis and a Proposed Theory. In P.C. Earley & M. Erez (Eds.). New Perspectives on International Industrial and Organizational Psychology. San Francisco, CA, USA: Jossey-Bass.

Recently many of the surveys appear to me to be attempting to advance a particular point of view or theoretical approach, even to a greater degree than House and charismatic leadership.

    Hi Christina -

You might also take a look at:

Winston, B. E., & Patterson, K. (2006). An integrated definition of leadership. International Journal of Leadership Studies, 1(2), 6-66.

They took a look at about 150 sources and subsequently presented 90+ constructs of leadership, from those sources.

    Hi Christina,

The suggestions from others are good. You may also check the the following three. The two HBR articles are not heavily theory-based but very readable for MBA students, while Yukl's classic review (although not a recent one) should give you a good start to connect the dots as you prepare for the class.

Goleman, D. 2000. Leadership that gets results. Harvard Business Review, March, 4-17.

Heifetz, R.A., & Laurie, D.L. 1997. The work of leadership. Harvard Business Review, January, 124-134.

Yukl, G. 1989. Managerial leadership: A review of theory and research. Journal of Management, 15, 251-289.

    Cheers!

Seeing the HBR reference jogged my memory, a good introduction: Kotter, John P. (1990). What leaders really do. Harvard Business Review, May/June: 103-111.
