  • 1.  Question about Exercises

    Posted 09-27-2011 00:14
    Dear Colleagues,

I am teaching an MBA class with sessions for emotional intelligence and leadership. I have a good set of readings but I was trying to find out more about good in-class experiential exercises and/or scenarios (or, possibly videos), suitable for group-work, which focus on,

    (1) Developing and displaying emotional intelligence-- for instance, on displaying effective and ineffective interpersonal strategies or intrapersonal emotions management, & (2) Transformational leadership-- e.g. developing transformational messages based on specific scenario situations, etc.

I would appreciate any insights. You can email me directly at smarinov@uic.edu. I am also happy to compile the responses should there be an interest from others on the list.

    Thanks,

    Sophia

    Hi Sophia,
You can try the following exercises:
    1) Emotions And Behavior: Exercises In Emotional Intelligence, Randall B. Brown, Journal of Management Education 2003 27: 122
    2) EMOTIONAL EPISODES AT WORK: AN EXPERIENTIAL EXERCISE IN FEELING AND EXPRESSING EMOTIONS
Donald E. Gibson, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT EDUCATION, Vol. 30 No. 3, June 2006 477-500.

    Best,
    Abdul Karim

i am not sure this is exactly what you need but you may find it interesting and very relevant and coming from an unconventional perspective of the public sector.

    Sophia,

Also from the public sector, you might find the following helpful (http://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Labor-Putting-Service-Public/dp/0765621177). The chapter focusing on human resource practices may help you develop a suitable exercise for your class.

Take a look at my Organizational Behavior text noted below. Each chapter references a film scene; a second one appears in the Instructor's Manual.
