The classic works in this area seem to be by Astin. Here are a few other works that I came across as I worked on a little project on student engagement. Hopefully this will at least help you find more stuff.

Hi Mike,
Within the field of higher ed administration, George Kuh is widely respected as the expert on student engagement. He founded the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE, http://nsse.iub.edu/html/about.cfm) and has been a leader in the area of learning outcomes and assessment. You might find answers to your questions in his research stream.
Cheers,
Angela

YOu can check the following website, www.selfdeterminationtheory.org and click on publications, then on education. You will find many empirical studies in schools about this (looking at GPA, dropout, etc.).
Robert J. Vallerand has also published about this.
Best,
Marylene Gagne

I recognize that this a bit off topic for this list serv. Is their any literature review, narrative or quantitative, that addresses the question of whether student engagement efforts have any effect on college GPA or college graduation rates?
Thanks,
Mike
