Human Resource Management Review
Call for Papers
Special Issue on:
Pay Systems in Organizations
Human Resource Management Review (HRMR) announces a call for papers for a special issue on pay systems in organizations.
The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2012.
The special issue is edited by Nina Gupta (University of Arkansas) and Jason Shaw (University of Minnesota).
Pay systems are among the most potent organizational influences on employee behaviors, yet theory and research on pay systems has lagged substantially behind that on other HR systems such as selection and performance appraisal. A better understanding of the effects of pay systems is necessary to improve both understanding of human behavior in organizations, and organizational functioning. Research shows that pay systems have a significant effect on employee performance, that managers' perceptions of pay systems are often at odds with employees' perceptions, that these inconsistencies have significant implications for the effectiveness of pay systems, and that, regardless of the actual pay system, both supervisors and subordinates often use the pay system to further goals other than those espoused by the organization. The special issue of HRMR will focus on these kinds of issues at both the micro and the strategic HR levels. It focuses on pay systems used for regular employees, rather than for top management teams or CEOs. Specific topics can include but are not limited to:
* Discrepancies between espoused and actual pay systems and their effects;
* Individual versus group influences on pay system dynamics;
* Supervisor versus subordinate goals for pay systems and their effects;
* Effects of dispersed versus compressed pay systems;
* Similarity in the effects of pay systems on performance, satisfaction, turnover, or other outcomes;
* Cross-level pay system dynamics.
Consistent with HRMR's priorities, conceptual and theoretical papers are encouraged, although some empirical papers may also be included. Papers should be in pdf format and submitted to Nina Gupta (
ngupta@walton.uark.edu) or Jason Shaw (
shawx218@umn.edu).
