  • 1.  Suggestions for up-to-date cases for Intro to Management course?

    Dear OB-Listserv participants,

I know you have all provided great assistance to many who have requested something similar in the past, and I am hoping to once again tap into our collective knowledge as we prep for Fall.

I am teaching the core intro course for sophomores (Management, Finance, Accounting majors mostly) on "Managing People and Organizations". We use cases across the semester to introduce students to thinking about issues broadly defined in terms of:

    1) Facing organizational change or some challenge (we last used "Should This Team be Saved?")
    2) Handling a recruiting or compensation decision (we last used "We Googled You")
    3) Handling a difficult general management decision (We last used "Two Tough Calls")

I would love to hear about any fun, interesting cases that you all use in your classrooms that you think address these broad issues. Thanks in advance for helping to introduce some fresh conversations in the Fall. I will compile all the responses and post to the listserv.

    Regards, John Paul.

    Hey JP,

Wanted to offer my two cents on 250.

It may be useful to keep in mind that 250 students don't typically have prior experinece writing case analyses. I've found that, for some, writing the analysis is just as daunting as taking a position on the issues.

One advantage of using cases that have commentary is that they give students some ideas to work with which enables them focus on the logic and mechanics of case analysis. I've found that cases without commentary are tougher for students new to management.

Hope your summer is going well.

    Best,
    Tracey
