Hello – I'm wondering if anyone has ideas about a good leadership assessment for undergraduates.  Given their general lack of work experience, the typical leadership assessments are in appropriate.  Please let me know: chatman@haas.berkeley.edu.  Thanks, Jenny

I have found that having undergrads complete Fiedler's least preferred
coworker (LPC) scale always produces a good discussion.

I use MindGarden's Actual Ought Full Range of Leadership (i.e. Bass' Transformational/Transactional assessment). There is also a prototypical characteristics scale based off of Schein's scale... I do believe it is in Duehr & Bono's recent article.

    Good luck,
    Nicole

Dear Jennifer, why don't you contact Bruce Avolio (UW-Seattle) and get permission to use his scale on Authentic Leadership.  MindGarden has the copyrights to it, but I think Bruce can get you the OK to use in a classroom.  It measures more of who you are and not what you do.

    Kim and Jennifer,
I have used material from Mind Garden before and you still have to pay for classroom application. They will give special rates when asked; if Bruce will not give permissions.

    Hi Jennifer,

If you're looking for a 360-style instrument, Sim Sitkin and I have developed one called the "Six Domains Leadership Survey" that has been used with undergraduates at Duke and in several New Zealand universities.  It worked well there.  (We asked for ratings from peers--could be asked as team-mates-supervisors, and "other raters" who had seen them in leadership contexts.)  If you have any interest or questions, please let me know (allan.lind@duke.edu) or check out the website at www.deltaleadership.com.

    Hi Jennifer,

I use the Northouse book (Sage).  Each chapter has an assessment.  The book is organized by leadership theory, the latest addition in the current edition being authentic leadership.  I have students complete assessments and write a paragraph on their scores.
