    Hello:

Is anyone familiar with research and/or case studies that have
examined emotional labor within the context of a religious
institution? I have been unable to locate much on this topic.

    Thanks in advance.

    Ken,
I immediately thought of the Kreiner, Hollensbe, & Sheep article about
Episcipal priests & their strategies for managing boundaries in their
(emotional labor) work. It's titled "where is the "Me" among the "we"?
Identity work and the search for optimal balance, AMJ, October 2006, 49(5),
    pp 1031-1057.

    Best of luck,
    Becky

    Dear Ken,

Perhaps you might find this link useful, although it is from outside of OB.  Dan Dennett and Linda La Scola did a qualitative survey of clergy who has lost their faith - naturally, this would create all kinds of stigma and pressures to dissimulate, both intrapsychically, from colleagues and from the congregations that depended on them to "spread the faith".  I think this has clear links to emotional labor.

It might also help to look at Dacher Keltner's work on "awe" as a spiritual emotion - the question of what are the emotional correlates of spiritual experience would be very intresting to explore with workers who depend on communicating such experiences to properly do their work, such as clergy...

    Ken,

I was about to provide the reference provided by Becky! That is the closest that I have seen in the management literature on the topic, and a pretty good one, if I may add. The same authors also have a more recent paper in AMJ that extends their previous work (see below). They are both excellent qualitative pieces.

KREINER, G., HOLLENSBE, E., & SHEEP, M. (2009). BALANCING BORDERS AND BRIDGES: NEGOTIATING THE WORK-HOME INTERFACE VIA BOUNDARY WORK TACTICS. Academy of Management Journal, 52(4), 704-730.

    Hope this helps

For an 'old' resource on this, you might try to find Organizational Climates
and Careers: The Work Lives of Priests by Douglas T Hall and Ben Schneider
(paperback book). Its almost 40 years old, but I am pretty sure they
addressed this issue. You can also check with Tim to find out whether there
    is updated work on this.
