  • 1.  Reading on Analytic Thinking

    Dear colleagues,

I'm currently developing a first-semester MBA course on different thinking
skills and looking for a core reading on "analytic thinking" that introduces
basic concepts such as hypothesis development and testing, root cause
analysis, etc. I'm hoping to find either an article (preferred) or a book
chapter that is practical and readable, yet challenging for MBA students.

Thank you in advance for any leads.

    Cheers,

    Dear Ingo Holzinger,

One of my old favorite texts is a chapter in an old Penguin Readings, "Thinking and reasoning" (ed by PC Wason and P.N. Johnson-Laird, first published 1968). Have a look at the chapter by P C Wason titled "On the failure to eliminate hypothesis - a second look" pp 165-174. It is a little experiment I often have done in class.

    Best regards

    Toby

    Ingo,

There is a collection of mini-guides (booklets) published by the Foundation for Critical Thinking thta have been very useful to me and my students. They include critical thinking, ethical reasoning, analytic thinking, and others. Their web site is www.criticalthinking.org

    Thanks,

    Ivan
