    Colleages,

I am currently looking for a ready-to-use simulation which could equally be applied for research and teaching purposes. Ideally, the simulation involves multiple stakeholders and is centered around one or more ethical/moral dilemmas in an organizational management context. I would appreciate any suggestions for computer-based, behavioral or other types of simulations as well as your experiences, particularly from a research point of view.

Any suggestions sent to christof.miska@wu.ac.at are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Christof

    Christof,

While it is not a simulation, I recommend the use of a criterion that is real life, and can serve for a teaching moment. I have used plagiarism software to capture the amount "borrowed" from other sources (of course after screening for quotes and references/bibliographic materials) in extra credit assignments (to ensure the research does not result in academic discipline) to establish the relationship between integrity, responsibility, self-control, stability, ethnicity, acculturation, workplace deviance among other variables. Once the data is collected and run, we are able to have a great heart to heart regarding plagiarism and many of the topics we have spoken about in our <st1:place w:st="on">OB</st1:place>, HR and Management classes.

You can find the methods in:

Martin, D.E., Rao, A., Sloan, L. R. (2009) Plagiarism, Integrity, and Workplace Deviance: A Criterion Study Ethics and Behavior Vol 19, No 1, 36-51

Martin, D.E., Rao, A., Sloan, L. R. (In Press) Plagiarism Ethnicity, Acculturation, and Plagiarism: A Criterion Study of Unethical Academic Conduct. Human Organization.

If you'd like the paper(s), send me a note.

    Best,

    Dan

    Dear OB Scholars

I am interested in other faculty members’ experiences with Ethics simulations. I would appreciate any suggestions regarding online simulation systems that have worked particularly well. This is for a graduate MBA course. If there are enough responses, I will be happy to post a summary to the listserv.

    Thank you very much.

I am presenting teaching a Masters level course on leading strategic change. The book I use for the change material is Hayes book on Leading Strategic Change. I have found it to be one of the best books for teaching change that I have used. I’m traveling out of the country right now which is why I am not more specific.

May I draw your attention to Deepwater, a competitive business ethics simulation game that has been on the market for several years and is used at colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad? You can find more information about it at www.businessethicssimulation.com . The simulation has been used by both graduate and undergraduate students.

(Disclosure: I am the developer of the simulation game.)

    Dear Deirdre,

Human Relations recently published a virtual special issue on Change Management containing seven papers that your students might find interesting: http://hum.sagepub.com/site/misc/VSI/Change_Management/CM_VSI.xhtml

The introduction<http://hum.sagepub.com/site/misc/VSI/Change_Management/CM_Introduction.pdf> to the virtual issue below explains the content:

This virtual special issue brings together a range of papers in the journal on the management of change. The particular inspiration is the paper by Cummings et al. (2015), which revisits the famous paper by Lewin (1947), published in the first issue of the journal, and demonstrates that the many popularisations of Lewin around a three-step model miss much of what was in fact said. We accordingly include the original Lewin paper. Two other papers, by Cooke (2007) and by Burnes and Cooke (2012), offer complementary accounts of the history of management ideas. Such analyses in fact represent something of a tradition in the journal. Almost as famous as Lewin is the Coch and French paper (1948) on overcoming resistance to change. Two later reassessments (Gardner, 1977 and Bartlem and Locke, 1981) demonstrate the many errors in Coch and French and show just how the paper needs to be viewed.

The present virtual special issue includes three other papers. We include two by Elliott Jaques (1950, 1953), to illustrate a rather different take on change management from that offered by Lewin, and also to remind readers of the celebrated Glacier Project, from which many important papers were published during the 1950s. Finally, Hendry's (1996) paper illustrates an arguably much more sophisticated analysis of change than that offered by Lewin, and thus development in a field of inquiry over a 50-year period.

    Professor Paul Edwards, FBA
    Editor-in-Chief, Human Relations

Several included papers are Classic Papers<http://hum.sagepub.com/site/includefiles/hum_classic_papers.xhtml> and are free to access.

We will be publishing a free access vodcast<http://hum.sagepub.com/site/podcast/podcast_dir.xhtml> to accompany the Cummings et al. article in the next week or so.

Your students might also find the following article about Cummings et al.'s findings interesting:

  • 6.  Business Ethics Simulations

    Posted 01-08-2016 21:41

    Hi Maria,

I have used the Turning Gears simulation by BizLX (www.ethics-lx.com). It is is an engaging interactive exercise that puts students in the role of a Product Manager for a manufacturer of children's toys.  Students have to make difficult decisions about advertising to children, product safety, stakeholder trade-offs, and supplier relationships. Based on the choices students make, they receive points. The simulation can last 60 to 90min and my MBA students have loved it. Sue Overton is the Marketing Director of BizLX may be contacted at sue@biz-lx.com or at 434-882-1622 for a demo as well as pricing.

And oh, I have no conflict of interest in recommending the Turning Gears simulation. :-) Good luck with your quest!

    Warmly,
    Sreedhari

    Dear OB Scholars

I am interested in other faculty members' experiences with Ethics simulations. I would appreciate any suggestions regarding online simulation systems that have worked particularly well. This is for a graduate MBA course. If there are enough responses, I will be happy to post a summary to the listserv.

    Thank you very much.
