This is a call for participation in a proposed SIOP symposium on leadership virtues/virtuous leadership.
Although virtues are present in the leadership literature, they are mainly discussed as correlates of one or more types of leadership, such as moral leadership, ethical leadership, spiritual leadership, transformational leadership, and etc. However, the concept of leader virtues has not been systematically defined, and has not been well grounded in the virtues literature. Many key questions related to leader virtues remain unanswered, such as what leader virtues are, how leader virtues are acquired, and within what contexts they are most likely to flourish. There is a lack of any semblance of a theoretical framework for explaining the effects of leader virtues. Arguably, research on virtues in leadership is still at an early stage.
I aim to organize and submit a symposium proposal for the 26th SIOP Annual Conference. This symposium/forum should focus upon conceptual and/or empirical studies of virtues and leadership. Any paper addressing links between virtues and leadership or a virtues based approach to leadership could fit this symposium/forum.
If you have a conceptual or empirical paper on this topic and wish to be added to the symposium proposal, please submit to me a summary of your study (about 500 words) by no later than Tuesday August 31, 2010. The required format is detailed in the SIOP web link:
