    Dear OB Division members:

The AOM PDW below might be of interest – it is especially relevant to OB faculty at the junior- to mid-career levels (but is open to all).

In the first hour of this session, panelists will provide their thoughts and insights about the transition from junior to more senior faculty.  The second hour of this session will involve smaller group discussions with panelists, in round-table format.  No pre-registration is required.

    Hope to see you there!

The organizational behavior (OB) scholar's progression through his or her academic career is marked by a number of critical transitions. Early career transitions (e.g., seeking one's first academic job, one's promotion from untenured to tenured professor) receive a great amount of attention in our field, and there are a number of resources available to help scholars understand both the process and the expectations that are typically associated with these transitions. In contrast, one's transition from a junior or early tenured professor to a full professor is often characterized by higher levels of uncertainty, numerous misconceptions, less mentoring, and fewer opportunities to gain insight about what to expect prior to, during, and after the process of becoming a full professor (Montagno, 1996; Rynes, 1996). Accordingly, the purpose of this PDW is threefold. First, we hope to provide a forum for leading senior OB scholars, who are full professors and who have successfully navigated the promotion process, to engage with mid-career OB scholars who are attempting to successfully navigate the process themselves. Second, we hope to help shed light specifically on how scholars' demands at the more advanced (i.e., full professor) career stage are unique from those faced during earlier career stages. Third, through dialog in this PDW, we hope to provide mid-career OB Division members with a clearer roadmap and strategies for successfully navigating the process of becoming a successful full professor. Thus, we hope to help our mid-career members better understand what to expect as they progress through this especially challenging, yet misunderstood, transition. To accomplish these goals, we will provide a forum in which leading senior faculty from a range of colleges and universities, as well as diverse set of experiences, will share their perspectives and experiences on how best to progress from tenured professor to full professor. In addition, we will also facilitate round table discussions in which participants can interact with those senior faculty, and seek more personal advice.
