  • 1.  Values and Self-Leadership

    Dear Colleagues,

I teach a Self-Leadership for Executives course in our EMBA program. I am adding a new section to the course on values and self-leadership.

I am searching for 5 or 6 articles on values for them to read and discuss that are appropriate for this audience, perhaps HBR, Organizational Dynamics, California Management Review, etc. A couple empirical articles are okay, too. By the time I teach them, they have a good understanding of correlation and regression analysis and don't mind tackling the articles as long as the theory is interesting and important.

I am most interested in articles that will clarify and broaden their understanding the concept of values, and the importance of clarifying and prioritizing their own values for leadership development and leadership action, such as role modeling (i.e., Superleadership).

If you have a values clarification exercise you like and use, I'd like to hear about it as well. I am currently sorting through exercises in, Values Clarification: A Practical, Action-Directed Workbook (Sidney Simon et al., 1995).

For this class, I am not keenly interested in cultural values, although I certainly understand the importance of them understanding cultural values. They are exposed to those in another course in the program and during their trip to China.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

    Bob Renn
