Measuring and Managing Hospital Unit Performance
    Thursday, August 6, 2010: 9 am – 1 pm.

Individual hospital units have repeatedly struggled with matching the supply side of staff resources to the demand side of patients' needs while attempting to satisfy employee needs and remain within budgetary constraints. The challenge has been formidable in the past and only growing more challenging in the current and future healthcare environments.

Under the theme of this year's AOM annual meeting "Dare to Care", the question of concern is how can unit managers ensure there is enough staff to provide quality care for existing and expected patients, maintain employee satisfaction via a healthy work environment without over-working or under-working, and meet budgetary constraints for resources?

This PDW is intended to bring together knowledge and expertise from both the academic and industry arenas to explore and discuss the many potential measurements that can be used to assess performance within the above areas in an attempt to identify key measurements that can be used which are: accurate, readily available, and easy to understand. With so many measurements available, it is critical that unit managers know which measurements to focus on to provide a level of confidence that performance is hitting a level in which the needs of the patient, employee, and unit are being met.

Participants can expect to engage in group and sub-group conversations discussing the potential of various performance metrics to guide unit managers toward excelling in performance at the unit, employee, and patient levels.
Although pre-registration is not required, for planning purposes we would like to hear from those interested by June 30, 2010.
