Bringing the psychodynamic approach and OD together to enrich meaningful change.

     Saturday, August 7, 2010: 8 am – 2 pm.

A PDW  organised by Ed. Schein, Tom Gilmore, Warner Burke, Sandra Schrijer and Leopold Vansina

Psychodynamics - largely based on the working principles of psychoanalysis and anthropology - and Organisation Development have a long history of experiences. Both disciplines travelled on separate roads, in the USA, in Europe and Australia as well. Their respective insights and practices in leading organisational change are little known in the other disciplines.  Their contributions, if known are even regarded with some disrespect, while Psychodynamics and OD can markedly enrich the evolving professional knowledge and practices in leading meaningful change.  The overall theme of the annual meeting of AoM: "Dare to Care" offers a genuine umbrella to bring professionals from different disciplines/orientations in touch with one another and explore how they can lead organisational change to enable healthy mental processes and constructive human behaviour to develop for the benefit of all stakeholders. The challenge is not in modifying behaviour to show more 'passion' and 'compassion' but to provide psychic and organisational conditions that allow the various forms of 'caring' and genuine relations to emerge and become expressed spontaneously and appropriately. Collusive processes, however, between consultant and client and/or within the client system can delude, even destroy constructive efforts.

    WORKSHOP GOALS:

    1. To become involved in an open ended journey of explorations in: a) the social complexity of leading organisational change: approaches, intents, values and processes; and in b) reflection-in-action to guide and adjust efforts to enable change to become meaningful for all concerned.
    2. To open new perspectives derived from O.D. and Psychodynamics that enriches organisational change efforts through their complementarities and/or through taking either disciplinary stances alternatively.
    3. To rediscover the uniqueness of organisations and the subjective experiences of its members/stakeholders so that leading change may start from where the client is.
    4. To create a platform of exchange and confrontation from which networks and research can develop.

    AN OVERVIEW:

This half a day workshop is organised around three major themes: "The relation between consultant and client" by Edgar Schein and Tom Gilmore; "Creating conditions for meaningful and more lasting change" by Leopold Vansina and Warner Burke; and "Collusion: How to work with it once it is revealed" by Sandra Schruijer.  A couple of organisational change cases in which the participants are currently involved will be discussed from the perspective of O.D. and Psychodynamics.

Pre-registration is required. Only 45 participants can be accommodated. Participants are invited to submit a change project they are currently involved in and in which they encounter some problems in the project (about two typed pages). These written proposed projects should be sent in advance to leopold.vansina@skynet.be before July 15. The organisers will select about eight cases to be discussed at the roundtables. The participants whose case is seen as most suitable for the PDW will be informed prior to the workshop. We have reserved time for two rounds of case discussions.
