    Dear OB Colleagues,

I am looking for a measure of critical thinking.  Does anyone know of any relevant scales that might be useful in survey research?

    Thanks for your input,
    Amy

    Amy,

I know of a paper by Hargreaves & Grenfell called "The Use of Assessment Strategies to Develop Critical Thinking in Science" (available at:  http://www.unisa.edu.au/evaluations/Full-papers/HargreavesFull.doc) that discusses several techniques for assessing critical thinking. You might be able to adapt one of them to whatever your specific context is. Like these, most of the measures I've seen involve assessing whether students have learned critical thinking skills.

    Amy,
The "problem solving" scale of the Work Design Questionnaire (WDQ; Morgeson & Humphrey, 2006; JAP) taps into that domain:

    1. The job involves solving problems that have no obvious correct answer.
    2. The job requires me to be creative.
    3. The job often involves dealing with problems that I have not met before.
    4. The job requires unique ideas or solutions to problems.

    Best wishes,

Critical thinking is a fuzzy term with different meaning for different folks. Sometimes it is used to mean the same thing as general cognitive ability or intelligence or "g" (not the made up intelligence terms that try to steal the brand:  leadership intelligence,  EQ,  football intelligence, pizza intelligence, etc.).

If you want a cognitive ability test for an unproctored internet survey, you need to have items whose answers cannot be looked up easily. Thus, vocabulary or analogy items, which can contribute to a measure of general cognitive ability, would be a problem because one could look up the meaning of the words. You might want to consider one of the forms of Ravens Progressive Matrices.  There is a 12 item set.

    Best wishes,
