    Dear colleagues:

     

    Do you have new data and new ideas that you are looking forward to showing the world?  Submit them to SPSP!

     

    The next meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) will take place in New Orleans, LA, on January 17-19, 2013.

     

    This announcement is to give you notice so that you may begin preparing your materials. The submission portal will open on July 9th, and the final deadline for submissions will be July 25th, 2012 (open until the last time zone on Earth).

     

    Submissions for SPSP 2013 will be accepted at http://www.spspmeeting.org.  This conference website is currently under construction, but it will be ready for your submissions on July 9 and at that time will have the relevant information about hotels, transportation, activities, etc.

     

    A GROWING CONFERENCE AND A NEW TEAM

    In the fifteen years since the first SPSP conference, our annual meeting has grown tenfold.  Such quick growth is testament to the success of the conference, but large meetings bring large challenges.  This year SPSP has chosen to transition from Tara Miller Events to FASEB, a leader in scientific meeting management.  We are excited to be working with FASEB, and we anticipate a smooth transition and a bright future.  In the event there are any minor bumps in the road, we ask for your patience in our first year with our new meeting management team.


    SUBMISSION PROCEDURES

     

    Scholars can be first author (which means being the presenter) on only one submission – either a symposium submission or poster, but not both. Symposium chairs should verify that speakers are not first authors on another symposium or poster. Failing to do so may result in the entire symposium being rejected. There is no switching which persons fill speaker roles after submission.

     

    Symposium submissions: Each presentation within the symposium will be described by a title and an abstract of up to 150 words. Symposium chairs also will submit a title and two abstracts, a 150-word maximum summary that describes the symposium (for evaluation purposes) and a briefer 50-word maximum summary suitable to print in the program. Each symposium can have 3 or 4 presentations, but no discussants.

     

    Poster submissions: will include a title and two abstracts, one with a 150-word maximum (for evaluation purposes) and a second 50-word maximum abstract (to be printed in the program).

     

    Data blitz: This year's conference will again feature presentations in a data blitz format, in which young scientists will present their work in rapid-pace form (under 5 minutes). This opportunity is available ONLY to submitters who will be advanced Ph.D. students (4th year and above) or postdocs at the time of the conference (January 2013). You should complete the normal submission process for a symposium or poster. You or your chair (if you are part of a symposium) will have an opportunity to indicate whether you are eligible and wish to be considered for the data blitz. Talks that are part of accepted symposia will not be considered for the data blitz.

     

    ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS

     

    - Every presenter will need to be a current SPSP member at the time of the conference (January 2013).

     

    - No person may be the presenter (first author) on more than 1 submission.

     

    - Data must be collected prior to submitting. Submissions that do not meet this requirement will not be accepted.

     

    - Abstracts must contain the specific goals of the study, methods used, summary of the results, and conclusions.

     

    - Submissions will be reviewed with regard to: scholarly/theoretical merit, soundness of methodology, relevance to social and personality psychology, clarity of presentation, significance, and originality. Final selection among submissions deemed meritorious will be made with an eye toward achieving a balanced and broadly representative program.

     

    ATTENTION NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS

     

    We strongly recommend having your submissions read and edited by a native English speaker before submitting to ensure the readability and comprehension of your proposal. Failure to do so is associated with an increase in submissions being rejected from the conference. Members of the SPSP Graduate Student Committee and other SPSP graduate student members have volunteered to read abstracts from non-native speakers and provide feedback; please contact Kathryn Bollich at spspabstractproofreading@gmail.com with your abstract no later than June 27 if you plan to use this service. Also, please note that it is necessary that your submission is clear about whether the data have been already collected.
