    David Eccles School of Business

    Salt Lake City, Utah

POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTMENT in Organizational Behavior, University of Utah, David Eccles School of Business, Management Department. A two-year postdoctoral appointment will be available beginning Fall 2010. We are looking for a strong candidate with a doctoral degree in the social sciences. The position will entail the opportunity to carry out research (including access to lab time and participant hours) and to work with faculty on research projects. The position will also entail teaching in our business program. The University of Utah values candidates who have experience working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds, and who possess a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for historically underrepresented students.

The Management Department includes both strategy and organizational behavior faculty.  The organizational behavior faculty includes Bryan Bonner, Arthur Brief, Kristina Diekmann, Gerardo Okhuysen, Kristin Smith-Crowe, and Harris Sondak. While united by a concern with the psychology of organizational life, the group's interests are nevertheless quite varied and include ethical decision making in organizations, prejudice at work, negotiations, workplace justice, group decision making processes, the role of time in groups and organizations, self-defeating organizational behaviors, intra-group conflict, and the display of sexuality at work. This work is published in various top-tier outlets.

The University of Utah is located in Salt Lake City, at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. This location offers excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, including easy access to the Rocky Mountains, the red rock country of the Colorado Plateau, and eight national parks including Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Parks. Salt Lake City is the center of a metropolitan area with a population of approximately one million residents and has extensive arts and cultural activities and a major international airport.

Please send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, sample papers, research statement, teaching statement, and three letters of reference to Nancy Hendrickson, Executive Secretary, University of Utah, David Eccles School of Business, Department of Management, 1645 E. Campus Center Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84112 or Nancy.Hendrickson@business.utah.edu. Review will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Please post for David Wasieleski:

Social Issues in Management Research Incubator

Do you have a great research idea but want feedback on how best to refine it into an impactful project? Are you at the project design stage and looking for advice on how to build in a clear theoretical contribution? Are you looking for a reality check on your planned methodology? Do you want to meet other scholars in your field of research and exchange ideas about hot new research projects? The SIM Research Incubator provides an opportunity to meet, discuss and get expert feedback on early ideas for research projects in the social issues in management field.

We want you to submit your research ideas for new research projects or papers in areas that are relevant to SIM (e.g., CSR, Behavioral Ethics, etc.). We will then select the best ideas to participate in the workshop and to share with the other selected participants in small breakout groups facilitated by established SIM scholars. The idea is to exchange ideas, get feedback, and identify possible collaborations with others.

Some of the confirmed facilitators include:

    Michael Brown, Penn State-Erie

    Andrew Crane, York University

    Patricia Werhane, University of Virginia

    John Mahon, University of Maine

    Barry Mitnick, University of Pittsburgh

    Duane Windsor, Rice University

    David Wasieleski, Duquesne University

During the session, the topic leader will present some ideas of what they think the exciting new research topics are in the specified area. Then the topic leader and the other participants will provide feedback on each of the ideas submitted beforehand.

To maximize the quality of the sessions, we will limit the number of participants so be sure to send us your best new ideas. Your proposal should be 1-3 pages in length. Multiple submissions are allowed but only one proposal per participant will be accepted in the workshop. We will send acceptances by July 10, 2015.

Please send your proposals by July 3, 2015 to David Wasieleskidavid.wasieleski@gmail.com and Michael Brown meb239@gmail.com

    Dear Colleagues

You are invited to the Caucus on 'Intentional Inclusiveness and Meaningfulness in Organizations: Canons of Integration' at the 2016 Annual Academy of Management conference in Anaheim, California.

This session is scheduled for Monday, August 8, 4:45 pm – 6:15 pm at the Anaheim Marriott in Platinum Ballroom 6.

Here is a brief description of the Caucus:

    Dear Moderator,

Please post the message below for us.

    Thanks

    *****************

The process of making organizations meaningful requires Socratic questioning and intentional thinking. In this caucus, we will discuss how organizations can develop intentional mechanisms to practice this process by effectively integrating diverse stakeholders. Specifically, we will outline canons that can enable organizations to effectively integrate this diversity towards meaningful inclusive outcomes.

We expect to build on the ideas of this caucus with future initiatives such as a journal special issue exploring the question of how organizations can develop canons of integration that are very meaningful, and what kinds of innovative work practices will be required to do so.

Please join us in this important conversation. Thank you in advance for your interest.

    Best regards,

    Rashmi Assudani & David Zoogah

    (Caucus Organizers)

  • 11.  BJM Special Issue Call for Proposals

    Posted 09-20-2016 14:37

    Dear colleagues,

Please find below the recently published BJM Special Issue Call for Proposals.

    BRITISH JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT

    Call for Special Issue Proposals

Proposals are invited for a special issue in BJM. The special issue will be published in early 2019 and we anticipate that the call for papers will identify a specific topic or sub-discipline, and a range of themes that might be addressed within that area. The proposal should contain the following:

    a) A statement of 1-2 pages introducing the existing state of research in the area (including existing debates in BJM), and why the special issue will make a meaningful contribution to them.

    b) Clear evidence that the special issue will attract a wide readership and meaningful citations.

    c) A draft call for papers.

    d) A list of the five best publications of each of the proposed guest editors, indicating with an asterisk if the publication is relevant to the proposal.

An effective special issue should include contributions based on robust empirical investigation(s), with solid theoretical underpinnings within a specific domain, and where possible building on a comprehensive body of literature and sets the agenda for future research. All proposals will be reviewed by members of the editorial board and judged according to quality of the likely contributions as well as their ability to enhance BJM's reputation.

Given BJM's general readership, very focused or specialized proposals, dealing with narrow niche areas of little interest to a general audience are discouraged.

The deadline for proposals is 15th November 2016 and a decision will be made by 1st March 2017. Proposals should be emailed to bjm@bam.ac.uk.

    Best wishes,
    Julie

Please post the message below for me.

    Thanks so much.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION THEME COMMITTEE (D&ITC)

PDW Chair: David B. Zoogah, Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio DBZditc@xavier.edu

2018 Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

The mission of the Diversity and Inclusion Theme Committee (D&ITC) is to provide learning and outreach opportunities that foster a more diverse and inclusive AOM community. We define diversity to include all of the multiple lines of difference that characterize our current and future membership. Inclusion means that all members have the opportunity to be represented, to have their voices heard and valued, and to have influence on the AOM. More information about the D&ITC can be found here

The Diversity and Inclusion Theme Committee (D&ITC) invites submissions for Professional Development Workshops (PDW's) at the 2018 Annual Meeting in Chicago, (USA). The workshops will take place Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11, 2018.

We encourage members of all Academy divisions and interest group to submit PDW proposals that explore diversity and inclusion particularly in the Academy of Management consistent with the theme of "Improving Health and Well-being in Society: How Can Organizations Help?"

If your PDW proposal has some linkages to the 2018 theme of Improving the health and well-being in society, including "what role can organizations play in positively affecting the physical, psychological, social, and financial health of individuals, groups, communities, countries, regions" who attend AOM, it is likely to be considered by DITC for sponsorship.

We are also seeking interactive and innovative PDW proposals that support DITC's primary role of helping AOM "provide learning and outreach opportunities that foster a more diverse and inclusive Academy of Management community." Submitters should therefore consider, but are not bound by, the conference theme. Of even greater importance, proposed PDWs must contribute to the mission of the D&ITC. We specifically welcome proposals for sessions that are designed, through interactive workshops and other suitable activities, to contribute to the development of a more inclusive AOM. PDWs are expected to:

    • Promote the well-being of diverse members in the Academy.
    • Facilitate a sense of inclusiveness in the AOM
    • Provide ideas or skills sets that might help division leaders in their inclusiveness activities and professional wellbeing needs of members from diverse backgrounds
    • Provide opportunities for positive and appropriate interactions among members from diverse backgrounds

PDWs are a platform for colleagues to share knowledge and expertise and foster the development of workshop participants. Coordinated by the Academy's many divisions, interest groups, affiliated societies and theme committees, PDW sessions are different from regular academy sessions in that they can have a longer time frame and can take many forms (workshops, interactive symposia, tutorials, breakout sessions, debates, case studies, round tables, research incubators, etc.).

The minimum duration a submitter may request in the submission system for a PDW submission is 2 hours. However, please note that each PDW Chair has the ability to decrease the duration of any submitted PDW proposal if he/she feels it would better the DITC members experience. Although a PDW can only be submitted to one Division, we do have a process for determining co-sponsorship after submission so we encourage partnerships with other divisions, interest groups, and committees where appropriate.

The Academy and DITC strongly encourages PDWs that create a meeting place between Divisional, Interest Group, and Committee members, and scholarly dialogue that is inclusive of diverse individuals and groups within and outside of the USA, Canada, and Europe.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 5:00 PM ET (NY Time)

All submissions must be made online via the AOM submissions system. If you have any questions regarding PDW sessions or you would like to discuss your PDW idea prior to submission, please contact the DITC PDW Chair, David B. Zoogah, DBZditc@xavier.edu at your earliest convenience, but preferably no later than Friday, January 5th, 2018. I look forward to receiving your proposal.
