Has anyone tried using mindmaps as a tool in making students prepare for case-study discussions or as a tool to present case-study analysis in the class etc.?

Am very eager to know of your experiences.

    Srini:

I've used MindMaps to prepare for my PhD comprehensive examinations, and now used those maps when I teach PhD seminars.

You can find the maps at http://www.cavarretta.com/ot/maps and I'll indeed present this approch this Friday at AOM (details below).

Not sure it would apply for MBA, because MindMapping was compelling due to extraordinary ability to go both deep and broad, not something as useful in MBA classroom ;-)

    Hello, Srini.

I've used mindmaps in MBA case analysis.  What I've found is that it is useful to students, in general.  However, how much they prefer it is a function of their approach to problem-solving.  Those students that are detail-oriented, high structure, typically prefer to develop detailed structure before analysis.  It does work well in allowing each student to contribute independently to a diagram which he/she can put aside and then start again a few days later without reviewing pages of narrative.  It seems to work well when people want to collect a lot of detailed data without developing a detailed structure beforehand, other than addressing major categories.  In general, it provides students with another tool, a visual tool, to identify and solve problems. It is one of several methods for analysis. I would encourage you to try it and to have students use it in other exercises or assignments before a case analysis.

I am currently using Mindmap to help develop a new course in our Procurement and Supply Chain program. I also use Mindmap to develop Concept maps that I use in conjunction with weekly reflection questions.
