I will be teching  (Organizational Development and change) course for (Master level students) next semester.

I am looking for a sample of course outline/syllabus.

I would probably stay away from the more traditional textbooks in OD.  Thomas' book, for instance, still covers too much material which is for the most part dated.  I would rely a lot more on the Total Quality Management materials (books by W. Edwards Deming, Joseph Juran –The Juran Instute, and others) which was accepted mainly as a fad in the late 1980's, but still very valid.  I will combine this material with a book such as Leading the Revolution by Hamel (2000).

I wonder how many programs out there still teach organizational development as a separate course!

    Thanks,

    Ivan

According to the Demings folks, Edwards distanced himself from the TQM movement; but rather than using one textbook, why not choose the chapters you think are appropriate from several and get your university to make them available online. That way students don't have to buy (nevermind carry) a ton of books. University of Phoenix has all of their materials online, so you wouldn't be setting a precedent.

    Cheers, Bruce

    Bruce,

You are right! Deming did not want to be associated with the TQM movement. I believe he wanted to stay away from all the so called "TQM Experts" who were cashing in the fad! Deming's Forces of Destruction (The New Economics, 1994, p. 122), and his Fourteen Obligations of Management (Out of the Crisis, 1986) explain his management philosophy (the profound knowledge stuff). Reading these things one may understand why he wanted to stay away from the fad. The organizational learning materials may represent a continuation to his ideas. You could also mix it up with the stuff from Hamel & Prahalad, "Competing for the Future," and the most recent book (I can't remember the title).  If students were hard workers and dealt with the demands of a rigorous graduate course, as in my graduate programs, they could learn a whole lot of very useful information about organizational competitiveness today.

    Thanks,

    Ivan

    Hi Zahra Kia,

Carter McNamara has an interesting website with a number of practice
examples for you to use in class.
    http://managementhelp.org/org_chng/org_chng.htm#anchor574384

Would you be so kind and summarize the replies you get and send them to
the list/to me? I'd highly appreciate your help.

    With best wishes,

    Anja.
