  • 1.  Looking for a class activity on Emotions in the workplace

    Dear OB ListServ Members,

    I am teaching a 3 hour class on Emotions in the workplace. This takes place within a 30 hours module focused on "Managing the whole person" – how affect, personal characteristics and life outside of work matter in the workplace and affect management and HR processes.


    I am looking for an interactive class activity to introduce the topic and help students become aware of the salience of emotions in the workplace. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Could I suggest this paper from Organization Management Journal that looked specifically at teaching emotions?

    Good day Ariane,
    There was a special of a journal on this topic--though I am not able to bring it forward right now.
    There is an AOM list devoted to Emotion in Organizations <EMONET-L@AOMLISTS.PACE.EDU>
    A few weeks ago there was discussion of sets of cards from the Center for Creative Leadership
     
    Neal Ashkanasy has published a fair amount on the topic of emotions in the workplace.  He might have ideas

    At the risk of self-promotion, you might try:

     

    Gibson, D. E. 2006. "Emotional Episodes at Work: An Experiential Exercise in Feeling and Expressing Emotions." Journal of Management Education, Vol. 30(3), pp. 477-500.

     

    Some version of this exercise may be very helpful for you in encouraging participants to discuss their emotions in work and school settings. A search of JME will reveal several other experiential exercises using emotions.
