  • 1.  Information sources for CEO characteristics

    Hello,

Concerning research on upper-level management and executives, does anyone know of a method and/or information source for gathering CEO characteristics (e.g., personality, attitudes) without the use of surveys or interviews. Thus far, we have found literature focused on motive coding (developed by McClelland and Winter) and have thought about mission statements as the content source, but have found no such precedent in the literature. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Greg

Dear Greg, as i recall there was a piece on attribution theory in which they coded the CEO's letter to the share holders. They found such biases as the ego defensive bias in which the CEo took credit for success but blamed others for failures. I know Mark Matinko, FSU, has done a lot of work on attribution theory and leadership.

    Hi Greg,

See Peterson, Smith, Martorana, and Owens (2003), The impact of CEO
personality on top management team dynamics: One mechanism by which
leadership affects organizational performance, JAP, Vol. 88, pp.
    795-808.

They use Q-sort methodology to discern CEO personality from archival
    sources.

    Best,
    Amanda

I would also recommend Don Hambrick and his colleagues' very creative studies of CEO hubris and narcissism, published in ASQ.

    Good luck with your research!
