    Hi everyone.

I have a student interested in doing a dissertation dealing with deviant physician behavior in hospitals. Has or is anyone doing such research in a health care setting? Any seminal articles you can direct me to?

    Thanks.

I don't know of any articles that look directly at MD deviant
behavior, but you may get some leads through the literatures of
    nurse-physician conflict/abuse, physician addiction/substance abuse or
MD's mental health problems. Here are a few recent references:

    Hi Barbara,

Very interesting topic!  Here are two papers your student may consider starting with that are relevant to both the general topic of workplace deviance and physician discretionary behavior:

    Hekman, D. R., Bigley, G. A., Steensma, H. K., & <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Hereford</st1:city></st1:place>, J. F. 2009. Combined effects of organizational and professional identification on the reciprocity dynamic for professional employees. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place> Journal, 52: 506-526.

    Warren, D. E. 2003. Constructive and destructive deviance in organizations. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place> Review, 28: 622-632.

The professional employees in the Hekman et al. paper are physicians.

I have thought about working as a volunteer in a local hospital just to get some ideas about similar topics.  Glad someone is addressing this very important area.

    Best,

    Jason

I would suggest reviewing  Dr.  Milisa Manojlovich, PhD, RN, CCRN
Assistant Professor, Division of Nursing Business & Health Systems,  work at the University of Michigan. Also take a look at the American Association of Critical Nurses work on Silence Kills.

These works examine MD/RN communication and effects of not identifying clinical problems in practice
