Title: Leadership in a Changing World: Moving Toward Authentic Leadership and its Implications.
Abstract: The challenges that face individuals, nations, and organizations have generated interest in authentic leadership. Leaders who expand their influence by espousing and enacting strong values while identifying with those held by followers are receiving increased attention from leadership scholars. Together, the processes of identification, positive modeling, emotional contagion, supporting self-determination, and positive social exchanges highlight how authentic leaders influence followers. Authentic relationships are characterized by transparency, guidance toward worthy objectives, and emphasis on follower development. One core challenge identified in the literature is the identification of follower strengths and helping to direct these strengths while creating a linkage to a common purpose. Through increased self-awareness, self regulation and balanced processing, transparency, and positive modeling, authentic leaders foster the development of authenticity in followers. An examination of U.S. presidential elections to include the pull of transformational leadership in 2000, the engagement of charismatic leadership in 2004, and the dynamics of charisma and authentic leadership in 2008, in conjunction with the underlying influence of congruent leader-follower core values and leader personality are woven throughout the workshop. The common thread of presidential leadership provides a common context from which to engage the audience and expand our discussion by drawing more broadly on the literatures surrounding charisma, personality dynamics, and authentic leadership. The workshop explores leadership in a changing world and seeks to engage the audience in developing research agendas that uncover the role of leadership and explore relational dynamics emphasized in response to global challenges facing organizations and nations in the twenty-first century.
