AoM 2009 PDW - FOSTERING ENTREPRENEURSHIP AMONG PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS THROUGH MENTORING PROGRAMS

Saturday, Aug 8 2009 10:40AM - 12:40PM at Hyatt Regency Chicago in Columbian

    Sponsors:  ENT and ITC

Our workshop will highlight the challenges experienced by the disabled, immigrants, and Aboriginal people and, in turn, discuss practical measures through which these challenges can be resolved through mentoring programs. We will discuss different types of mentoring programs-including workshops, public legal education clinics, networking, matching and forums-geared to develop interest and capabilities in self-employment among people with special needs  Specifically, the disabled, immigrants, and Aboriginal people will be the focus. The results of the workshop will provide a model to enable universities and other organizations to reach out to their local communities.

    STRUCTURE

We intend to segment our workshop into three sections: approaches to stimulating entrepreneurship in 1) Aboriginals, 2) the disabled, and 3) immigrants. The approach reflects how differing sources of disadvantage amongst the groups create a need for varied methods.  Researchers in each of the areas will present their conceptual and applied approaches and will also present an overview of other relevant research in their areas.   A moderator, in conjunction with the presenters, will facilitate the identification and discussion of similarities and differences amongst the different target groups and mentoring approaches. Finally, we will split the participants into smaller groups for discussion and development of new research streams and programs.
