Call for Papers: State of the Practice Edition
Journal of Business and Psychology (JBP)

    ·         Do you often wonder why there is so little empirical research on whether or not employers should share talent calls with their employees (e.g., tell people they are high potentials)?

    ·         Do you ever cringe when a consultant makes a claim about employee engagement leading to bottom line results, yet there is little research to date to support it?

    ·         Do you ever wish that someone would do a study that would finally answer whether executive coaching really has a positive impact on leadership bench strength?

Here is your chance to make a difference!  Every two years the Journal of Business and Psychology will publish a special feature called the "State of the Practice Edition" which focuses on hot topics in human resources, talent management, and industrial and organizational psychology.  The purpose of this special edition is to:

    a)      cover current hot topics and cutting edge practice areas in HR and/or the psychology of organizations, and

    b)      raise compelling research issues and ideas for researchers to pursue.

The audience for the JBP is primarily academic, however, our vision is to have the articles in the State of the Practice Edition be authored primarily by practitioners.  With this special issue the JBP is looking to break new ground in the field of I-O Psychology by bridging the gap between scientist and practitioner.  This special edition provides authors with the unique opportunity to speak directly to the academic community, and to help shape their thinking and their research agenda.

    ·      For practitioners, it is a new vehicle for sharing the absolute most cutting edge areas of practice and burning topics in your world, and having your difficult and challenging questions be heard.

    ·      For academics, it will provide a wealth of fresh hot topic areas, new theory to build and hypotheses to test, and the opportunity to positively impact organizations with your research, in a way that in many ways has not been done before.

By contributing an article to JBP's State of the Practice edition you can help make a difference in bridging the science to practice gap, and help shape the research agenda of the field!

We are currently soliciting proposals for the next edition of the State of the Practice to be published in 2010.  The deadline for proposal submissions is August 1, 2009.  Proposal submission information is listed below.  All proposals will be peer reviewed.  Authors of proposals that are accepted will have until January 1, 2009 to complete and submit an 8-12 page double space manuscript for final review.  Sample current burning topics in organizations today include:

    ·      Should organizations share talent calls? (i.e., tell people if they are a high potential or not).

    ·      What is the right measure of employee engagement to use?

    ·      How do you accurate identify employee potential?

    ·      What is the real impact of having an articulated employer brand?

    ·      Does executive coaching have any impact on succession planning decisions?

    ·      What percent of people really change their behaviors following a 360 feedback program?

    ·      What types of online training have the best impact?

    ·      Is it possible to have a consistent global staffing and selection model?

    ·      What data can we show leaders that stops them from changing talent calls based on current performance (i.e., from a high potential one month to a non high potential the next)?

    ·      What are the best measures or metrics to use in succession planning/talent management programs?

    ·      What are the leadership attributes needed for the CEO of the future?

    ·      Is there really a need to change HR programs and policies in response to Generation Y entering the workforce or will they adapt like prior generations did?

    ·      How do organizations truly quantify the impact of their diversity and inclusion efforts?

Proposals should be submitted to the JBP State of the Practice Guest Editor, Allan H. Church at ahchurch@aol.com.  Each proposal should be no more than 2-3 pages and follow the format listed below:

    ·      Title: Catchy/pithy title that will draw attention to the article.

    ·      Topic: Description of the topic to be covered and why this is a hot issue or cutting edge practice.

    ·      Practice: Description of what current practice elements will be discussed in depth in the article.

    ·      Research: Description of what research areas or questions will be raised in the article.  This is a key section. Authors will lay out a research needs agenda.  It is through this effort that we are attempting to bridge the research/practice divide - - messages from the front line informing and motivating the science of the discipline.

    ·      Sources: List a few key sources from the literature, popular press or internet (if any exist) that will be used to ground the submission.
