Hello OB list colleagues,
I am working on a short article for the Capella website Organizational Perspectives (www.organizationalperspectives.org) "Back to Business: From War to Work." The focus is on ways organizations (including managers, co-workers etc) can effectively welcome military vets or guard/reservists back into the workplace. We often read about the difficulties people have when adjusting after deployment-- but usually don't see practical recommendations for people or policies in the workplace. My guess is that well-meaning people may be less than helpful because they just don't know what to do or say. This piece can't solve the problems, but I hope to offer some suggestions and start some dialogue.
So far I've spoken people who returned from active duty military and reserves, and one person still on duty in Iraq. I'd like to hear stories from the organizational side as well. If you have seen leadership, management, HR, training or coaching strategies that helped returning service members-- or co-workers-- make the transition to civilian jobs-- I'd like to hear from you.
Thanks in advance,
