  • 1.  SA 8000 Certification on the ground

Does anyone have direct experience and/or knows of academic resources regarding the SA8000 certification?  Can it be safely assumed that if a company, in China for example, is SA8000 certified that it does uphold the principles of that organization?  Do you know of studies that point to cases where this has not been the case?

    Dear Richard,

I'm not familiar with SA8000.  However, several researchers have studied voluntary environmental programs, such as ISO14001, the chemical industry's Responsible Care program, and the ski industry's Sustainable Slopes program.   One significant conclusion is that outcomes (e.g., environmental performance, free riding) depend on characteristics of the programs, e.g., certification requirements, reporting requirements, and accountability for environmental performance.   Much of the work in this area has been done by Michael Lenox, Andrew King, Nichole Darnall, Irene Henriques, Jorge Rivera and their colleagues.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Best,
    Jodi
