  • 1.  Ideas/Syllabus for course on Interpersonal Dynamics and Personal Effectiveness

    Posted 03-12-2009 09:50

Colleagues:  I'd like to offer a course that overlaps minimally with traditional OB courses, and that would be focused on developing capabilities for personal and interpersonal effectiveness.  I'd like to offer the course to students who are getting closer to graduation, and are open to acquiring capabilities that will help them succeed in their working relationships, personal relationships, and life.

I've found one text that seems to show some promise--Human Relations for Career and Personal Success: Concepts, Applications, and Skills" by DuBrin-but I suspect there must be others.  I sense that such a course could leverage much of what we've been learning in the area of Positive OB, and I'm excited about that.

I don't want to re-invent the wheel.  If good course outlines and resources are out there, and you happen to have one, I'd be ever so thankful if you would share your thoughts with me and others on this list.

Thanks, in advance, for your suggestions.

    Dan,

You might want to look at the POS Teaching Materials posted by the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship at U of Michigan:

    http://www.bus.umich.edu/Positive/POS-Teaching-and-Learning/Teaching-Materials.htm

In my MBA course, I use the Reflected-Best-Self exercise to great success (instead of doing 360 degree feedback, which would also be valuable).

Another textbook you might want to take a look at (assuming that you are dealing with undergraduate students) is:

Interpersonal Skills in Organizations, 3rd Edition
Suzanne  de Janasz, UNIV OF MARY WASHINGTON
Karen O. Dowd, JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
    Beth  Schneider, George Mason University
    Softcover,  464 pages
    ©2009, ISBN-13 9780073405018

    Kind regards,

    Christian

    Hi Dan,

I want to echo what Christian suggests. If you go to the Positive Organizational Scholarship website at the University of Michigan  there are several syllabi that you might find useful.

Click into the core ob course syllabus (called ob501) or a  course I teach on Managing Professional Relationships (OB 615), there are full teaching notes for each class, suggestions of powerpoints and videos etc.

    Dan,

In a course on leading change, I have a semester long project where students are asked to tackle a personal change project. I usually assign Bob Quinn's Deep Change to kick it off. There is usually a good range of changes represented - from exercise routines to battling addiction. Along the way, they share learning with the class, learn the value of vision, accountability, and support systems, and also understand how individual change concepts apply to organizational change.

Like others who have posted, I highly recommend the Reflected Best Self exercise. Good luck with the course!

we also have been very successfully using a 360 feedback survey (for fulltime students there is a version that is designed for non-hierarchical teams, so isnt really a 360).  you can get more info on it at <http://deltaleadership.com>

    Dan,

You might want to take a look at Psychological Capital: Developing the Human Capital Edge by Fred Luthans, Carolyn Youssef and Bruce Avolio – lots of good information about efficacy, hope, optimism, and resiliency (covered in separate chapters), and other potential positive constructs such as creativity, wisdom, well being, flow, humor, gratitude, forgiveness, emotional intelligence, spirituality, authenticity, and courage (Oxford University Press, 2006).

    Dan,
I agree with Linda Thomas regarding the Psychological Capital book by Luthans. It would partner well with a book I use called The New World of Work: Challenges and Opportunities (2002). It is an edited version by Cary Cooper and Ron Burke. Two chapters that would fit really well include whe opening chapter by Ron Burke about how organizations are transitioning ("Organizational Transitions") and a chapter on "Developmental Relationships at Work: A Learning Perspective" that is written by Douglas Hall and William Kahn. Another text you might look at is Work in the 21st Century: An Introduction to Industrial and Organizational Psychology, 2nd ed. by F. J. Landy and J. M. Conte.
