Dear Susan, in my own career, I achieved tenure at the Associate level in two different universities. At the first, i never pursued promotion to full because i thought it would make moving more difficult by limiting the range of schools i could go to, ie non Ph.D. granting. At the second, I did.

Subject: Surveys re: why faculty choose not to pursue full Professorship?

Good morning -- my university is trying to better understand what factors might influence faculty (both men and women) who are eligible for, but do not pursue, the full Professor rank. Additionally, we'd like to better understand factors that might encourage (or discourage) those at the Lecturer rank to pursue doctorate studies.

We were thinking of conducting a survey to better explore these issues, but didn't want to 'recreate the wheel' if possible.

Would you happen to know if any university or college has conducted a similar study.....and if so, would it be possible for us to gain access to that survey instrument?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or guidance you might offer

    Susan
