    Hello OB community-

A colleague of mine is interested in identifying any business schools/programs who are named for women (individually or as half of a couple).  It's a little hard to search for this info, so the listserv seemed like a great way to go straight to the source.

Thanks so much!  We appreciate your input.

Contact AACSB in Tampa and you can at least get those schools that are accredited.

    Betsy,

I went to our website and here is the blurb from our "history" posted there with the names of the Terrys.

In October 1991, the College of Business Administration was renamed the C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry College of Business to honor two distinguished benefactors whose support made possible a series of endowed chairs, faculty fellowships and scholarships. This renaming also elevated the visibility of the College, while the increased endowment helped the college recruit and retain key faculty.

    Betsy,

The Terry  College of Business is named after a couple.  I had a horrible night's sleep last night and can't recall their names at this time – my apologies.  However, the Terrys are great benefactors to our college.  He passed away some time ago, but she is still alive.

I apologize once more for not remembering their first names even after being here for 16 years.

    Betsy,

I find this a very interesting question and it obviously raises important historical (and ongoing) issues about the comparative place of men and women at work and in society.

Sadly, I do not know of any business schools named after women, but on a more light-hearted note, my previous employer had a building called the Berrill Building. It was named after a bloke, but everyone called it Beryl.

    Hello Betsy,

Like Bob, I went to our website -Penn State Erie- to obtain the following information about the Sam and Irene Black School of Business.

In 2003, The Sam and Irene Black School of Business was named in honor of the Blacks' $20 million estate gift for school endowments, the third largest gift in Penn State's history, originally announced as an anonymous gift in 1998. Samuel P. and Irene Black were leading benefactors in the Erie, Pa. community for most of the twentieth century. For seventy years, Sam was a driving force in the Erie Insurance Group, which grew to become a Fortune 500 company.                                                                                                                                                                   &nb! sp;                    Source: www.behrend.psu.edu/aboutPS/timeline.htm

There is a short video about the Blacks at
    http://www.behrend.psu.edu/academic/business/index.htm

Incidentally, female benefactors have played a key role in the developmnent of the Erie campus of PSU, which is home to the Sam and Irene Black School of Business. The campus was founded through an endowment made in June 1948 by Mary Brownell Behrend, widow of Ernst Behrend, co-founder of the Hammermill Paper Company, Erie, Pa. Mary donated her Glenhill Farm Estate of more than 400 acres to Penn State University, creating the Behrend Center of Pennsylvania State College. In 1997, Kay Logan, an Erie philanthropist of the arts and education, donated $1.1 million for the purchase and furnishing of a neighboring colonial estate for students to enjoy cultural pursuits such as dinners, speakers, poet! ry and literary readings, and musical performances. Her donation was made as a tribute to her late husband, Harry A. Logan Jr., former Chairman of the Board and President of United Oil Refining Co. in Warren, Pa.

Hope this helps. Best of luck to your colleague in her research!

    Christina

    Hi, Betsy:

My alma mater, Wilfrid Laurier University, has an entrepreneurship institute that is named parially for a woman.  The Schlegel building comprises approximately half of the school of business and economics.

    Good luck with the project!
