Does anyone have a favorite exercise for introducing a teaching module on organizational change?

    Hello Vicki,

I usually adapt a "traditional" build a lego house for the premier (in your case, governor) team exercise by laying off team members, changing instructions part way through the exercise (in writing, in person with an opportunity to voice opinions, etc.). It leads to a great discussion about resistance to change, how to introduce change, and survivor emotions.

    Best regards,

Another easy, quick way to introduce change is the rearrange the seating for the class period. You can also use some class members as confederates and ask them to come a little early to assume the seats of other class members. It's powerful how such a relatively small change can alter the moods of people and make us uncomfortable. It really drives the point home that we do NOT like change. Anke:)

Well, we don't like change when it is arbitrary and imposed on us. We like change if we perceive it as beneficial and are in control of it.

    Hello Preeti,

I usually create 5 or 6 groups and give each group a baggie full of assorted pieces of lego (assembled from my son's lego collection). I then tell them that they have 15 to 20 minutes to build a creative house for the premier whose features they will later have to present to the class. Sometimes, I don't assignment leadership roles - I just let it emere. Sometimes, I get individuals to play leadership roles - country club, authoritarian, laissez-faire, team leadership etc. and I allow the groups to decide (at the midway point) whether or not they want to fire their managers.

Unfortunately, my exercise instructions are in French. I haven't used it for research.

But, there are plenty of lego building out there – just google or yahoo: lego leadership exercise. Here are a few that I found.

If you want a quick change exercise, then change your class structure in to a circle, instead of the traditional row design.  Now, if you want to really get the students some exposure to change and its dynamics, make them study GM! It is a company that even when facing dramatic and deifini9ng situation still think that "they have a good model."  Get students to find recent articles (Fortune Magazine, Business Week, Wall Street Journal, etc., which is material that describe real time situations). Forget about legos! Those are not very realistic exercises. They are more like games!
