I am sure many of us are VERY intrinsically motivated.  Yet, if we weren't well compensated with extrinsic rewards, we would probably be more than happy to find ourselves intrinsically motivated in some other career.  I'm pretty sure that many would-be teachers have chosen alternate career paths for this reason.  I would be willing to bet that many school districts simply priced out of the self-motivated labor pool.

Is this due to motivation or to economic needs? Even the most intrinsically motivated artists have to pay rent.
