    Dear all,

This is Shuo Wang, a Ph.D. student of Dublin City University and my research topic is about Corporate Social Responsibility and Leadership.

Nowadays, I just prepare a conference paper, named responsible leadership and I'm wondering what's the difference between responsible leadership and
ethical leadership? Could you recommend some reading materials to me?

    Many thanks for your help!

    Best wishes,
    Shuo

    Dear Shuo

I would recommend the current (February 2009) issue of the journal Corporate Governance 9(1).  This is a special issue on leadership for CSR, with several good articles that illustrate and discuss corporate social responsibility within several industries.  While these articles do not specifically differentiate between ethical leadership and CSR conceptually or theoretically, they provide many good examples of CSR and a couple of case studies, so I think it will be clear.

    Shuo,

For literature that directly defines and examines ethical leadership
(albeit not as compared to responsible leadership), I recommend work
by Michael Brown, Linda Trevino, and colleagues, for example:

    1. Trevino, Brown, & Hartman. 2003. A qualitative investigation of
perceived executive ethical leadership: Perceptions from inside and
outside the executive suite. Human Relations, 56: 5-37.
    2. Brown, Trevino, & Harrison. 2005. Ethical leadership: A social
learning perspective for construct development and testing. OBHDP, 97:
    117-134.
    3. Brown & Trevino. 2006. Ethical leadership: A review and future
    directions. Leadership Quarterly, 17: 595-616.

    Good luck,

    Thanks for the cites, Jessica!
    You beat me to it.

Shuo - I'm not aware of academic work on a construct called "responsible" leadership.

    Dear Shuo
in 2005 there was a track on the European Academy of Management Conference
(EURAM)called "(IR-) Responsible Leadership". This track has been
organized by two colleagues from the University of Bundeswehr in Munich
(Germany), Sonja A. Sackmann and Rainer Marr.
You can find the track description as well the abstracts at
    http://www.euram2005.de/site/program_abstracts.pdf

    SHUO,

I would recommend to look for the publications ( although not necessarily scholarly publications)of the Aspen Institute, EFMD Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative(n GRLI), or ASHRIDGE for example.

To Linda's comment, as far as I know there is a construct of responsible leadership already conceptualized, based on interesting work by Maak, and Maak and Pless, although its empirical measurement and testing may still be underway, or "in press", or part of dissertations under these professors. Shuo, kindly refer to the publication below as a starting point:

Maak, T. (2007). Responsible Leadership, Stakeholder Engagement, and the Emergence of Social Capital, Journal of Business Ethics, 74, 329-343.

Note:I meant to post this to the whole network but accidentally it ended up only in Shuo's e mail yesterday. Sorry :) Kleio
