Introduction
In an era of constrained resources, continued privatization/outsourcing and the prospects of two prolonged continuing conflicts, the Department of Defense faces some of its greatest challenges since the Vietnam War. Great effort is being dedicated to improving the use of technology, information security and developing better methods of intelligence gathering and usage. However, over the past decade, evidence has emerged that issues dealing with social policy have been comparatively more reactive. Issues of sexual harrassment, religious intolerance and the use of contractors on the battlefield have gained wide-spread attention. The consistent variable for success in any organizational equation is the need for highly trained, competent and reliable personnel. The purpose of this book to reflect on some of the more salient issues facing leadership, service members and DoD organizations in hopes of gaining new perspectives and insight to refocus on the most critical variable for mission success: the human being.
Objective of the Book
The main objective of this book is to provide a variety of perspectives regarding critical policy issues that impact military and civilian members working for the U.S. Department of Defense. The scope of the book is intentionally very broad and great latitude will be given to exceptionally well-articulated papers.
Target Audience
This book will be an important reference to practitioners working on critical policy matters affecting member of the DoD workforce as well as a "snap-shot" of timely and relevant social policy issues currently present in the Department of Defense at the time of publication.
Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Race relations
* Gender issues
* Sexual harassment
* Religious expression
* Pay and benefits
* Family support issues
* Protection of sensitive personnel information
* Training and education of social issues
* Critical issues facing military personnel
* Critical issues facing civilian personnel
* Leadership challenges
* Honor, ethics and character issues
Submission Procedure
Authors (both researchers and practitioners) are invited to submit chapter proposals on or before April 1, 2009. Each proposal should be 2-3 page clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed topic and theme of development. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified on or about May 1, 2009 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by June 1, 2009. All submitted chapters will be peer-reviewed.
