Dear all

I'm preparing a phd course on contemporary topics in OB. Does anyone have references to articles that may be used to describe the field in a broader sense under the heading "The field of OB". I'm going to use the following, but need more: Cascio, W. F. & Aguinis, H. 2008. Research in industrial and organizational psychology from 1963 to 2007: Changes, choices, and trends. Journal of Applied Psychology, 93(5): 1062-1081.

    Bard,

You may want to consider the following article, which addresses trends in the field regarding methodological issues:

Aguinis, H., Pierce, C. A., Bosco, F. A., & Muslin, I. S (2009). First decade of Organizational Research Methods: Trends in design, measurement, and data-analysis topics. Organizational Research Methods, 12, 69-112.

This article is available at http://carbon.cudenver.edu/~haguinis/ (click on the "refereed journal articles" link).

I hope this helps, and best of luck with your course, whichs sounds very interesting!

    All the best,

    --Herman.

    Bard,

Here is what I am thinking: using all of the Annual Review of Psychology reviews of organizational behavior as base material and asking my students to write a paper defining the field, describing the ebbs and flows, analyzing the trends and showing direction for the future. I am teaching a doctoral seminar on management theory. So I am also thinking of asking them to attempt a theory of organizational behavior. I have done something like it in the past for an advanced masters seminar in OB. Hope it helps.

    Bard,

I would also ask PhD students to read or review some books too. For instance, in the field of OB I would ask them to read (review) two of Peter B. Vaill's books, "Spirited Leading and Learning," and "Management and a Performing Art." Very thought provoking!

    Thanks,

    Hi Bard,

You might consider a chapter or two from Greenberg's book "Organizational Behavior: State of the Science." Some of the chapters cover specific topics, but some are more general.

    Hi Bård

Broad overviews of any discipline or sub-discipline are a useful starting point. Baba already mentioned Annual Review of Psychology and I'd add to that Annual Review of Sociology which sometimes intersects with OB in interesting ways and International Review of Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

But for PhDs I'd probably go more for relatively 'new' topics and under-explored areas. So Research in Organizational Behavior might be a good place to take a look.

    Cheers

I would recommend including a couple of chapters from the Handbook of I/O Psychology in your readings.

    Hi Bard,

The most helpful article I read during my first week as a PhD student was:

    Heath, C., & Sitkin, S. B. 2001. Big-B versus big-O: What is
organizational about organizational behavior? Journal of
    Organizational Behavior, 22: 43-58.

Your students may enjoy reading it, as well.
