    Apology for cross-posting.

    Dear OB and HR colleagues,

I am teaching a work motivation course to graduate students in a terminal I/O master program. I have two questions for you. First, I would like to add two lectures on cross-cultural work motivation issues. Can someone refer me to some good books, chapters, and review articles? Second, I usually assign applied, team projects in this course so that students may have the opportunity to use some work motivation theories to address real-world issues. However, I have used the same team projects in the past a few years and am finally tired of them. I wonder if you have any team project ideas related to work motivation. If you have taught similar courses before, I will be more than happy to trade my team project stuff with yours. Thanks in advance.

    Dear Jin Yan,
    I suggest two sources:
    1. The review on:Organizational Behavior, which appears in the Annual
Psychological Review, 2007 (Gelfand, Erez & Aycan). In addition, I wrote a
chapter on Social Cultural Influences on Work Motivation in:
    R. Kanfer, G. Chen, & R. D. Pritchard (Eds.) (2008). Work Motivation: Past,
Present, and Future Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum.

    I hope this helps,

    Miriam Erez

    Hello Jinyan and colleagues,

Readings would depend how broadly you'd treat Motivation. Here are couple
    suggestions:

    Randolph, W. A. & Sashkin, M. (2002). Can organizational empowerment work in
multinational settings? Academy of Management Executive, 16, 102-115.
Schwartz relates, in his papers, values to motivation. Here is a general
introduction to his work, but some of his other articles have more specific
    application to work-motivation:
Schwartz, S. (1999). A theory of cultural values and some implications for
work. Applied Psychology: An International Review, 48, 23-47.

Earley, C and Erez, M published several articles that relate to motivation
across cultures; for group-related perspectives see:

Earley, P. C. (1993). East meets West meets Mideast: Further explorations of
collectivistic and individualistic work groups. Academy of Management
    Journal, 36, 319-348.

Nicholls, Chantell E.; Lane, Henry W.; Brechu, Mauricio Brehm. (1999) Taking
self-managed teams to Mexico. Academy of Management Executive, Vol. 13 Issue
    3, p15

    Warm wishes,

    Hi Jinyan,

I see the theory part is covered, as to your second point, I ask my MBAs to analyze several work/organizational practices (e.g., ProMES, call centre, MBO, QCs, Scheduling, self-managed teams, lean production practices). I ask them to search on their own for an illustrative organizational case where those are presented (e.g., call centre at AoL) and to analyze this from a motivational perspective - after they attended sessions on motivation and have been introduced to the most relevant motivation theories/concepts. They then have to write a report and present the essence thereof in class, in essence presenting their analysis and critical evaluation from a motivation perspective, and then making suggestions how a particular work practice in a particular organization can be enriched, or made more motivating.

It stands and falls with the topics you choose - ProMES and call centre e.g. tend to be winners, and the groups and the class tend to learn from this. Marking is a challenge, as not only topics and complexity of topics vary yet also the organizational cases they pick. - Yet it is practical and it forces them to get their head around a "real" work situation in a real case. Hope this helps,

    Best, a.
