Dear OB colleagues,
on Nov 27 I posted this call for collaboration and in grateful recognition of the help received, for the benefit of the larger community, I summarize all replies posted or sent directly to me:
Original message posted by me:
before I make a move I cannot undo I thought I should plow this caring and informing network regarding recommendations for a modern HR textbook that ideally:
- Available in English
- Would stress the strategy orientation of HR
- incorporate organizational behaviour highlights
- would have an eye on the HR needs in emerging markets, developing countries of whatever you wish to call them.
Summary of the kind replies I received , posted or sent directly to me, follows:
· I have adopted the book by Gary Dessler (Pearson) and found it very comprehensive and useful for MBA level participants. Ranjeet Nambudiri
· Having just reviewed several HR books for a graduate level Industrial/Organizational Psych course, I would agree that the Dessler seems to be a good choice. I had been teaching in an MBA program and would have selected it for those students as well. Theodore H. Rosen, Ph.D.
· Another good text is: Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright (2008). Fundamentals of Human Resource Management, published by McGraw Hill. You will, of course, need to supplement it with some strategic HR readings. Mahesh Subramony, Ph.D
· International Human Resource Management by Dowling, Festing and Engle ((Thomson/South-Western). But there is no much reference to emerging markets. My students did some fact-finding for HR practices in some emerging markets. Dr. Ivan Blanco.
· Changing Face of People Management in India, publishers, Routledge, UK, 2008- A research & case based book. The book is featured on the Routledge website at www.routledge.com and is written by Pawan S. Budhwar (Editor) and Jyotsna Bhatnagar (Editor) respectively of Aston Business School, UK. and of Management Development Institute, India.
· 'Shaping Business Leaders: What B-Schools Don't Do'-Asha Bhandarker, has been published by Sage,(Response Books) August 2008.The book presents an empirical work conducted in a longitudinal format on a large sample of MBA graduates from India's top 9 management schools and focuses on impact of B School education on the profiles of graduates.
· Davila, A. y Elvira, M. M. (2009) (Eds.). Best Human Resource Management Practices in Latin America. Oxford, UK: Routledge.
· Managing Human Resources in Latin America An Agenda for International Leaders (Global HRM) (Paperback) by Marta Elvira (Author)
Many thanks to all.
Best,
