    Advancing a Multi-Actor Perspective on HRM Implementation

    Chair: Jeroen Meijerink; U. of Twente;
    Chair: Sargam Garg; Rutgers U.;

    In this symposium we focus on the highly relevant topic of human resource management (HRM) practices implementation. We bring together five empirical studies that shed light on the possible reasons for the weak relationship between HRM and desired outcomes as reported on in previous studies. In doing so, this symposium advances a multi-actor lens and uses multi-method perspective to understand how different HRM stakeholders (including line managers, project managers, HR professionals and employees) jointly realize desired employee outcomes through implementing HRM practices. Through their pioneering work, the presenters in this symposium draw from different theoretical perspectives to investigate the cognitive frames, interpretations, interests, relationships and actions of these HRM stakeholders that influence HRM implementation as well as their impact on employee attitudes and behaviors. An interactive session will engage the audience by discussions about theoretical and practical implications of the studies. Further, through this symposium, several potentially fruitful avenues of research on this topic can emerge.

    "The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created--created first in the mind and will, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them, changes both the maker and the destination." -John Schaar.

    "We are very minor blips in a cosmic story. Aspirations for importance or significance are the illusions of the ignorant. All our hopes are minor, except to us; but some things matter because we choose to make them matter. What might make a difference to us, I think, is whether in our tiny roles, in our brief time, we inhabit life gently and add more beauty than ugliness."
