    Dear colleagues:

I'm looking for literature on the effect of incentives of different magnitude on motivation. Do you have any recommendations? Many thanks.

    Hi Tanya,

I recommend Alfie Kohn's work, Punished by Rewards.  Also here's a chapter (lay for MBA students) that you may find interesting.

    Tanja and colleagues,

There has been a rather interesting and long debate on this point in Social Psych and OB areas. For a comprehensive view, look at several meta-analysis performed by Deci, Ryan and colleagues and, on the other hand (or 'camp') by Eisenberger and colleagues.

    Warm wishes,

    Hi Tanja,

I would also look at the Experimental Economics Literature. For instance, Uri Gneezy's "The W effects of incentives," or "Pay enough or don't pay at all." You can download Uri's papers from his website.

    Best,

Jacob, I'm glad to see you mention the alternative perspective!  Mike Crant and I have questionnaire data from working adults (as opposed to traditional use of students) that undermine the case for the undermining effect.  Can't get it published in part b/c it's all questionnaire data, and we wonder too if it's a bigger challenge to publish b/c it challenges a sacred cow. Any other thoughts out there about the sacred cow, the complexity of the empirical record vs. the possible mainstream belief in a straightforward undermining effect, and/or other unpublished studies that undermine the undermine effect using data that are objective and /or experimental and not solely perceptual? Thanks,  Tom

I am not up to date on the recent issues in Intrinsic versus Extrinsic motivation but there is some material from OB Experts on my blog (2006) in the context of the proposal for Arizona to turn voting papers into lottery tickets which address the issue.

    You can find it here:
    http://home.comcast.net/~evansmgmtutor/wsb/lettersandopeds/arizona.query.08.08.2006.html

There is even a reference to Batemen and Crant!
