POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Management and Organization in the University of <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Alabama</st1:postalcode> at <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Birmingham</st1:postalcode> School of Business seeks a tenure-track senior assistant, associate or full professor of Human Resources Management. Applicants should possess interests in research and teaching in the functional areas of human resources management, broadly defined. The selected individual will spearhead the human resources area including interfacing with local businesses, involvement in student recruiting, creation and maintenance of an active student SHRM organization, and maintenance of an active research profile. Faculty rank will depend on the applicant's qualifications with emphasis on research and teaching records.
Primary teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate courses in the functional areas of human resources management. Additional teaching duties in management may arise. A commitment to teaching excellence and quality research is essential. UAB has excellent teaching facilities and support to meet scholarly research needs.

The City
The <st1:postalcode w:st="on">University</st1:postalcode> of <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Alabama</st1:postalcode> at <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Birmingham</st1:postalcode> is located in <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Birmingham</st1:postalcode>, the largest metropolitan community in the <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Alabama</st1:postalcode> with a population in excess of one million. <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Birmingham</st1:postalcode> is a leading regional cultural center and its many attractions include the Alabama Symphony, Alabama Ballet, Alabama School of Fine Arts, the Birmingham Museum of Art, and the Birmingham Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. The city's pivotal role in the civil rights movement is chronicled in the important Birmingham Civil Rights Institute that promotes civil and human rights worldwide through education.
A significant attraction to the area is the unprecedented quality of life in the <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Birmingham</st1:postalcode> metropolitan area. The housing market and cost of living are among the most affordable in the Southeast. Downtown living is experiencing resurgence and attractive housing choices exist in the city's historic neighborhoods as well as in the surrounding communities. Area schools, both public and private, are nationally recognized among the nation's best. Within 30 minutes of the lively downtown business district are recreation opportunities that attract visitors from across the nation.
The University
UAB is one of the most research intense universities in the nation with annual research expenditures that exceed $425 million. In funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), UAB ranks 20th overall with five Schools in the Top 20: Health Professions (2), Optometry (3), Public Health (12), Dentistry (12), and Medicine (18). The Carnegie Foundation classifies UAB as an institution of "very high research activity," the only school in <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Alabama</st1:postalcode> to meet that definition. This puts UAB among the nation's top 95 research universities, public or private.
The University's annual operating budget is approximately $2 billion. UAB includes 13 schools which cover a broad range of social sciences, humanities, and science – UAB's medical and health oriented schools are national leaders and their faculty collaborate on research with faculty in the School of Business. This is also true for the <st1:postalcode w:st="on"><st1:postalcode w:st="on">School</st1:postalcode> of <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Engineering</st1:postalcode></st1:postalcode>. The University and its health system occupy over 85 city blocks in the heart of vibrant downtown <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Birmingham</st1:postalcode> with many new buildings under construction and others planned for the near future.
There are 2,212 faculty and 17,591 students enrolled at the University. The student body includes 11,284 undergraduates of whom 30% are minorities and more than 60% are female. UAB attracts many of the best and brightest students from <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Alabama</st1:postalcode>, the nation, and some 105 countries. The student body is nearly 75% full-time, with the average age of entering freshmen 18.8 years. More than half of all freshmen live on campus. The average ACT score of entering students consistently bests state and national averages.

The School is accredited by the AACSB International. The annual operating budget for the School is $12,500,000, research funding is over $600,000 annually, and the philanthropic giving for this year will exceed $2,000,000.
The School's 55 full time faculty members reside in four academic departments: Accounting and Information Systems; Finance, Economics, and Quantitative Methods; Management and Organization; and Marketing and Industrial Distribution The faculty is diverse with women and members of minority groups represented in all academic departments.
There are 1,900 students enrolled in the <st1:postalcode w:st="on"><st1:postalcode w:st="on">School</st1:postalcode> of <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Business</st1:postalcode></st1:postalcode> and they come from across the nation and numerous foreign countries. The 1,550 undergraduate students enrolled in the School include 1,050 full time students and 645 part time students. The approximately 350 graduate students are enrolled in a variety of programs including the MBA program, a Masters of Accounting program, a combined MBA and Master of Public Health program, and a combined MBA and Master of Science in Health Administration. A joint PhD program with the <st1:postalcode w:st="on"><st1:postalcode w:st="on">School</st1:postalcode> of <st1:postalcode w:st="on">Health Professions</st1:postalcode></st1:postalcode> is also offered to students who wish to pursue combined doctoral level work in health care and business.
The current strong focus within the School of Business on enhancing research and scholarship complements the School's historic "practice orientation" which prepared students for careers in the business sector.
