Two New Submission Formats: Work, Aging and Retirement

Work, Aging and Retirement announces two new submission formats: 1) submissions to the annual review issue and 2) submission of research proposals.

    1) Submissions to the Annual Review Issue of Work, Aging and Retirment

Although empirical work drives much of the research on worker aging and retirement, this research is guided by strong conceptual and theoretical models. For this reason, Work, Aging and Retirement will introduce an annual review issue, the first of which will appear in 2016. Submissions to the review issue can take two forms: (1) papers that summarize or integrate existing literature on a topic, and/or (2) papers that provide conceptual and theoretical development on an important issue. Rather than submitting a complete paper, authors submit a short (6 page) proposal describing the review, why it is important, and the ability of the author team to meet the final deadline for the complete paper. Proposals will be reviewed by the editorial team. For those proposals that are accepted, the complete paper will be invited and submitted for a later date.

The deadline for proposals for the 2016 Review Issue is January 31, 2015. Specific guidelines for the submissions are available here (the Call for Proposals document is also attached with this email):

    2) Submission of Research Proposals

One criticism of our field is that some excellent research may go unpublished because of null results. Rather, it might advance our field if authors who come up with a strong research question and design were able to publish their work, regardless of the findings.

The new Research Proposal submission route addresses this issue. Specifically, author(s) would first submit a research proposal to the journal.  The research proposal should include an introduction, method, and analytic strategy. The proposal would first be reviewed by an Action Editor, and if he or she decides the proposal has merit, it will be assigned to two reviewers who would evaluate the potential contribution and offer feedback for improvement.  Based on the reviewer comments, the Action Editor would then decide whether to reject the research proposal, invite a revision of the proposal, or accept the proposal.  Once accepted, the author(s) and the editorial team agree to publish the full manuscript in the journal, conditioned on the proposed methods and analytic strategies being fully executed and regardless of whether the hypotheses are supported by the findings.  In addition, Work, Aging and Retirement will publish the abstract of the accepted research proposal on its website.

A complete description of the process is described here (the Call for Proposals document is also attached with this email):
