    Friends,

I am interested in prior research on Multiple Realities within the context of individual agency.  How does the multiple realities phenomenon affect knowledge acquisition, perceptions, and attitudes.  My work in this area is heavily influenced by postmodernist/constructionist traditions to posit multiple realities within the realm of the physical, the transcendent, and the virtual.  Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Ali.

Hi:  You might take a look at some papers within social psychology on the notion of "social reality" -- that
people help one another to define what's happening, in most or all situations.  Some good sources would
be papers by Hardin and Higgins and by Levine and Higgins.

PS:  There is also some very recent buzz about a new video game called "Braid," in which players are
led to experience different worlds, each with its own set of principles.

see robert perinbanayagam's work: signifying acts, the presence of self.  he has a new book on games and sports that doesn't specifically address but ties in to what you are interested in. he is a symbolic interactionist well versed in the theories you mention.

as interactional beings with agency we are involved in interpretating, creating and reconfiguring "reality" all the time whether in video games, in the classroom, or while watching tv.  a solid grounding in symbolic interaction is where you should start, rather than with postmodernist theories, many of which by now are outdated.  "reality" has moved into hypermodernity but that doesn't change the fact that we must make sense out of our common everyday experiences in very basic ways.

    Dear Ali,

I wonder if the quite large literature on multiple selves might get at some of what you are looking for, especially if you are interested in questions related to agency.  If you are considering virtual worlds, then Sherry Turkle's work could be interesting to you.

One avenue that could be quite interesting here would be to explore differing effects of multiple worlds vs multiple selves. One might ask, for example, what would drive a person to shift or seek new realities, and whether these factors differ from those that drive a person to seek new identities or selves.  It seems to me this is a relatively unexplored territory in an already highly explored (identity) literature.

    Just my 2 cents,

    Hi Ali,

Frank Landy had an interesting article about postmodernism and applied psychology in the TIP (The Industrial-Organizational Psychologist) journal a few years ago. I'll post the link below; I think it might be useful for your research.

    Best,
    Daniel
