    Dear Colleagues-

A while back I sent the following inquiry and did not have any responses , so I thought I would try again. Any thoughts would be appreciated ...

I would appreciate your ideas for an in-class application exam for an undergraduate OB class for students to complete in a 75 minute period for a team grade. I am looking for an application exam that will engage the entire team on a major OB topic which can be graded but minimizes the writing for the team and emphasizes the problem solving aspect. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

    Dear Stan,

You could give the team a short business problem/case that would involve the application of the course material or a particular theory. Asking the team to present the solution in a more creative way, for example, role play (considering you want to minimize the writing involved) could get the whole team involved. You might want to lay out the evaluation criteria in an extremely structured way to ensure the team is judged on their problem solving skills only.

    Hope it helps!

    Warm regards,

    Stan:

Regarding the topic of "group think" - - - one of the possibilities that you might want to consider would be the use of:

    1.  How GROUP THINK influenced the Chezlovakia  land giveaway (Sudtenland) via through the "leadership" of Neville Camberlin negotiating with Adolph Hitler.  I have a series of power point slides that you could use/alter if you are interested.  The topic also illustrates the concept of appeasement thereby offering a comparison between the left and the right philosophies.  Iran's nuclear ambitions can also be tied into the topic.

    2.  How GROUP THINK influenced the outcome of The Bay of Pigs through the "leadership" of Eisenhower, Nixon, and in particular, the Kennedy Administration.  I have a series of slides that you could use/alter if you are interested.

    Dear Dr. Williamson,

How about a short case analysis?

I used the Judge and Robbins text last semester. The cases and questions at the end of the chapters proved to be a good source.

I told the teams what chapters (2 or more) they had to read. I gave the case (usually one page long) in class, and allocated 45 minutes for the team members to read the case, discuss, and respond to the questions. Sometimes I created my own questions to integrate multiple concepts/issues.

Then I randomly picked two teams that presented their responses in class, accompanied by Q&A. The presentation was also a graded activity.

Finally, the students had to fill up a peer evaluation form.

    Best regards,

    Viraj Varma

    Stan,

If I were doing this, I'd ask students to structure their analysis of a brief
unseen case around 4 P's model (Position-Problem-Possibilities-Proposal) and
present such ideas (using flipchart notes, not PPT, and with opportunity for
Q&A) in a way which would be suitable for a given audience. That way, I'd have
something in writing (for quality assurance purposes) but nothing extensive and
onerous in terms of their writing skills.

You might also consider sending this around the AOM 'Management Education and
Development' (MED) division, who have more of such queries, or the OBTS (Org
    Behaviour Teaching Society) list...

    Hope that helps,

    Peter
