    THE UNIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY

    ********************************************

Texas A&M University is in a period of significant growth and is approaching its goal of hiring approximately 450 new faculty members to enhance departments, including the Psychology Department, that have been recognized as among the University's strongest.  Compensation, teaching loads, and research resources (library, start-up funds) are competitive with other top-flight research universities.

Texas A&M University is a Top 20 public research institution, and the 6th largest university in the US. Located in College Station, the university is 90 miles from Houston, 100 miles from Austin, and 200 miles from Dallas.  The Bryan-College Station metropolitan area has over 160,000 residents, and is experiencing rapid job growth.  College Station was recently ranked the #1 most undervalued housing market out of 317 US metropolitan areas, accounting for local income levels, quality of schools, weather, and population density (National City Corp., as reported in the Wall Street Journal, 2006).  Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live 2006" also ranked College Station in  the top 25 US cities for "Most Educated," "Shortest Commute," and "Youngest".  Texas has no state income tax, and as of 2006 is home to more Fortune 500 companies than any other state (including New York and California).  College Station has a local airport served by American and Continental airlines.
