    Dear colleagues,
has any of you by any chance done research on the performance of
    government departments?
My PhD student is specifically looking for ways of assessing the
    performance of government departments.
    Any suggestion is appreciated.
    Kind regards, Birgit Schyns

Check out the following book for a good place to start:

Boyne, George A., Kenneth J. Meier, Laurence J. O'Toole, Jr., and Richard M. Walker (eds.). (2006). Public Service Performance: Perspectives on Measurement and Management. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press.

    Hope it helps!

    Hi,
See the more general view of measuring organizational performance - comparing public vs private/ not-for profit vs. business:

Baruch, Y. & Ramalho, N. (2006). Communalities and distinctions in the measurement of organizational performance and effectiveness across for-profit and nonprofit sectors. Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Quarterly, 35(1), 39-65.

    Hi Birgit,

There are some great journals in the public administration field (e.g.,
Public Admin Review or Journal of Pub Admin Research and Theory) that speak
to issues of performance. You may also want to consider the IBM Center for
the Business of Government - they have some great case studies devoted to
public sector performance and accountability concerns.

    Best of luck!
