    Dear Colleagues,

I have a study investigating how role ambiguity influences intrinsic
motivation and how it further influences my outcome variable.
I am looking at intrinsic motivation as a mediator in my study. Basically,
I hypothesize that increased role ambiguity will decrease intrinsic
motivation , through which my outcome variable is impacted.
But I have not come across a lot of literature on how role ambiguity will
affect intrinsic motivation, Nor have I found a main theory to explain
this linkage between role ambiguity and intrinsic motivation.
Suggestions will be appreciated. you can respond here or email me at

I would be happy to summarize the suggestions and reposting it on OB

I think you need to set this up first as a general problem in social science -- the interaction of nomothetic and idiographic variables in organizations. You then need to review all of the literature on "role" and on "motivation." Further, you must master the "intrinsic/extrinsic" literature.

See how far that gets you. I have some literature tucked away in my files. Now about five years old. I'll look for it.

    Good luck!

    Dear Angela,

I suggest to review the literature on organizational justice/fairness and
    probably stress.
